Building as a Societal Imperative
Andreessen's argument that institutional failure is often a failure to build — production, infrastructure, and systems — not merely a failure of intent or capital.
Claim
When masks, tests, ventilators, and payment rails fail in a crisis, the bottleneck is often not knowledge or money but capacity we never built. Building — factories, housing, education systems, financial plumbing — is a societal imperative, not a sector hobby.
Why it matters
Shortages during COVID were a visible version of a slower crisis: housing, energy, transit, and institutional software that doesn't compose under stress. This connects to organization as intelligence — firms and states both fail when coordination can't turn intent into capability — and to shared language model — we debate values in language while the physical and institutional stack rots.

- Is "build more" always the answer, or does it sometimes mask misallocation and regulatory capture?
- What would bipartisan building look like in practice — not slogans — in housing, health, and energy?
- Which bottlenecks are genuinely technical vs political vs cultural (permission to build)?
- Does a building imperative risk crony infrastructure, or can open markets and public goods both count as "building"?
- Where is my leverage as a builder of software vs someone who should advocate for physical capacity?
